The City of Olten

Alte Holzbrücke in Olten - Via SurpriseVia SurpriseWith around 20,000 inhabitants, Olten may not be Switzerland’s largest city, but it holds a central and surprisingly vibrant position in the country. Nestled between Zurich, Bern, Basel and Lucerne, it is one of the best-connected places in Switzerland – perfect for students who want to explore all corners of the country.

Olten combines the charm of a small town with the convenience of a transport hub. The old town with its historical wooden bridge over the Aare River, the town church, and the Kunstmuseum (Art Museum) are just a few of the local highlights. Nature lovers will enjoy the hiking trails to the Tüfelsschlucht gorge or up to the Säli Castle, with a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area.

The city also has a vibrant cultural life. The Kulturzentrum Schützi hosts concerts, theater, and exhibitions throughout the year. There are regular open-air events, small festivals, and student-friendly gatherings – perfect to meet locals and other internationals. When it comes to nightlife, Olten punches above its weight. You’ll find cozy cafés, student pubs, and bars along the river. Thanks to its location, it’s also easy to hop on a train and enjoy a night out in Zurich or Basel – and still be back in your student housing before sunrise.
